Dimensional Weight Explained

Learn why carriers compare actual weight with package volume and how to use a DIM divisor correctly.

Why dimensional weight exists

A large, lightweight package can consume significant vehicle or aircraft space. Dimensional weight converts package volume into a weight-like value so carriers can price for space as well as mass.

The divisor matters

The formula is straightforward, but the divisor and rounding rules are commercial terms. They can vary by carrier, service, contract, lane, and date.

DIM weight = package volume ÷ divisor

Use the current tariff

For an invoice or quotation, use the current divisor and rounding rules published in your carrier agreement rather than relying on a generic internet preset.
